Gateway Arts in Education PARTNERSHIP

The Gateway Arts in Education Partnership is a program inspired by a form of arts integration which uses a work of art as a text for learning.

The partnership is a mutual commitment to ongoing professional development and continued arts integration that begins with the Gateway Arts in Education Institute and a classroom residency. Educators, specialists and teaching artists partner to create activities inspired by a work of art that are tied to the curriculum.
Guided by a partnership between educators and teaching artists, students engage in an in-depth exploration of a selected work of art. This process, in which students make personal connections between the work of art and their world, builds critical thinking skills and stimulates perceptual abilities. Sharpening abilities to observe, analyze and interpret through discussion around a work of art promotes cross-cultural awareness and develops necessary skills for all education endeavors.

This three-day professional development course introduces classroom educators, specialists and district administrators to the Partnership and the featured Works of Art. Based on the core belief that works of art provide inexhaustible opportunities for learning, the Institute is the beginning of a collaborative relationship focused on arts integration in the curriculum. Participants discover how to work as a team, along with teaching artists, to integrate a work of art into the classroom and school learning environment. In the process, they learn about Inquiry, Art-making, Attending, Context and Reflection, the five tenets of this form of arts integration.  Learn more...

“My students usually perform best on individual activities due to their behavioral problems, however that was not the case during this experience. They worked extremely well in the co-operative setting and met all of the goals with enthusiasm. In my opinion, they gained a new respect not just for art, but for themselves. They were able to communicate this during our classroom reflections as well as demonstrate their ability to discuss art in a systematic and intellectual manner.”

– Yvonne Plowey, Emotional Support teacher, Allegheny Intermediate Unit
